AFRICA: Tunisia Attracts Descents ahead of World Cup 2018

The qualification of the Tunisian national team to the 2018 World Cup attracted interest of the North African nation descents who ply their trades in European leagues.

Since Tunisia’s qualification to the Russia World Cup, their first following the 2006 World Cup, the Carthage Eagles have attracted many foreign based players. Many of them favorably responded to the formal request of the Tunisian Football Federation.

Tunisia coach Nabil Maâloul has already met almost all including Saif-Eddine Kahoui (Troyes), Mouez Hassen (Chateauroux) and Ellyes Skhiri (Montpellier), all were born in France, and Rani Khedira (FC Augsburg), born in Germany and younger brother of Juventus and German midfielder Sami Khedira.

Striker Wissam Ben Yedder (FC Sevilla) has not yet accepted Maâloul’s offer as he always wanted to play for the French national team. Yedder has yet to receive a Les Blues call up. The other players are expected to make their national team debut for Tunisia in March in a friendly encounter. Prior to Tunisia’s efforts to bring on board some European players, neighbours Algeria largely benefited from European born players.
