Kidus Giorgis needs just a point to lift the Ethiopian Premier League title for a record 13th time after brushing Ethiopia Nigd Bank aside in Addis Ababa. Adama Ketema saw off Hadiya Hossana 2-1 in the earlier fixture.
The Horsemen beat Nigd Bank in a solitary goal in the week 23 game played in Addis Ababa Stadium. Midfielder Tesfaye Alebachew struck from range in the 72nd minute to hand Giorgis a decisive win over Ethiopia Nigd Bank. Nigd Bank backline were unbreakable for much of the first half but relinquished after the recess. Former Giorgis player Abdulkerim Hassen should blame himself for failing to convert a glorious opportunity after being set up by Nigerian striker Philip Dauzi. The match arbiter showed Dauzi the marching order for unsupportive behavior. The ex-Electric forward was seen in altercation with the linesman instantly after given a red card. The win lifted Mart Nooji’s side nine points clear of second place Adama Ketema, which squeezed past the relegated Hadiya Hossana.
Hossana are banned by the Ethiopian Football Federation Discipline Committee from using their home ground so the game was played in Hawassa. Veteran striker Tafese Tesfaye broke the deadlock minute after the half hour mark. The forward completed his brace in the stoppage minute of the interval to give Adama a two goals cushion. Hossana halved the score when Amrela Deltata struck early after the recess. Tafese continues to lead the goal scoring chart with 13 goals.
