CAFCC | End of the Road for Ethiopian Torchbearers

Ethiopian flag bearers in the 2018 CAF Total Confederations Cup Wolaitta Dicha and Kidus Giorgis bow out of the continental competition after failing to secure wins on aggregate. Wolaitta Dicha defeats Young Africans 1-0 in the return leg while Kidus Giorgis fall to CARA with the same score line in Brazzaville.

Wolaitta Dicha started off the duel on high after scoring an early goal trough Togolese import Arafat Djako but were unable to overturn the 2-0 defeat that they suffered 10 days ago at Dar es Salaam as Young Africans advances to the group stages 2-1 on aggregate. Djako struck from point blank range following Yanga’s backline concentration lapse. Both sides spurred some clear cut scoring opportunities although Dicha had a poor second interval. Yanga yet again made history by eliminating another Ethiopian club that knocked Egyptian giants. In the 1998 they beat Ethiopia Bunna on aggregate while 20 years later they achieved the same feat on Wolaitta Dicha after the Bees of Tona shocked Zamalek in the first round.

Kidus Giorgis’s quest for victory at Brazzaville was unsuccessful. They lost 1-0 to CARA as the sides went straight to penalty shootouts where the Congolese outfit emerged victorious 5-3. The homers dominated the proceedings likewise broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through Ngoma Mbo.

There is no Ethiopian side in the Confederations Cup group stages. First timers Wolaitta Dicha surprised many by reaching the last qualifying round.
